Book Recommendations for Christian Teachers

As Christian educators, we believe that teaching is a gift from God and a way to glorify Him. Whether you're teaching in a classroom, leading a school, or providing behind the scenes support, the work of education matters because we are serving the Lord. Still, discouragement sneaks in, and the passion of the calling to teach that once ignited zeal feels lost.  Scripture like Colossians 3:23 reminds us to work with all our hearts, as for the Lord. But how can we practically live that out in our educational roles?

Our School Services department has compiled a list of encouraging books that address the work of education through a Christian worldview. Whether you’re just entering the classroom, feeling weary in your current role, or simply looking to grow, this list has a book sure to teach and encourage you.

  1. On Christian Teaching by David I. Smith: Shows how faith can and should play a critical role in shaping pedagogy.
  2. Teaching Redemptively by Donovan Graham: Challenges teachers to incorporate biblical principles into all areas of education.
  3. Flourishing Together by Lynn E. Swaner: An encouragement to Christian educators to pursue a flourishing vision that includes purpose, relationships, learning, resources, and well-being.
  4. The Courage to Teach by Parker J. Palmer: Seeks to reconnect teachers with their vocation and their students while recovering their passion for teaching.
  5. Every Good Endeavor: Connecting Your Work to God’s Work by Timothy Keller: An overview of the Christian view of work which can in turn provide a thriving work and personal life.
  6. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Pete Scazzero: In this book Scazzero says, “The combination of emotional health and contemplative spirituality unleashes the Holy Spirit inside us so that we might experientially know the power of an authentic life in Christ.”
  7. Take Care of Yourself by Pablo Martinez: An encouragement to Christians to find the balance between serving others and finding rest.

List compiled by Megan Randolph, Associate Director of Global School Services.
